Rethinking Waste: The Circular Solution

The circular economy is about rethinking the way we use resources and materials. At its core it involves designing to avoid waste and pollution, keeping materials and products in use for longer, and conserving our natural resources and regenerating nature. It replaces the traditional "take-make-dispose" linear model with one that emphasises repair, reuse, and recycling. The Australian government has committed to doubling our circularity by 2035.

Closing the loop on textiles & clothing

Melbourne's The Fabric ReStore is more than just a fabric store. Run by the Creative Community Space, it’s a place where recovered textiles and sewing supplies are given a second life. Whether you're looking for affordable fabric, need help with a mending project, or want to learn sustainable sewing skills, it's the place.

Another outstanding resource is Circular Sourcing - an Australian marketplace dedicated to the sale of designer deadstock and quality surplus materials like fabrics. As outlined in the ABC article from August, "excess fabric can be sold, meaning what was waste becomes an extra income stream".

Media power & influence!

The concentration of global media power has come into focus once again. First with Disney’s cancellation (then reinstating) of Jimmy Kimmel's US late-night show; and a potential TikTok deal involving Fox or Oracle; and the recently-merged Paramount-Skydance majority-cash bid for all of Warner Bros Discovery.

Global media is presently just 6 very big players that control over 90% of mainstream media. Of course the major issue is about 'who' shapes what we as a community think about and value.

In regards to Australia, the GMICP report found that Australia has the second-highest media concentration in the world (only Brazil was greater). Australia’s newspaper sector alone is dominated by four companies who control 84% of the market.

  • So what can you do? Support local and independent news providers - especially those with a justice focus. Some options are Mongabay, Crikey, The New Daily, and Truth Out. Use Media Bias/Fact Check to assess your choices. Be switched-on, informed and deliberate in shaping your world for good.
